Litter policy
Our Inner West 2036 has the following outcome ‘Inner West is a zero waste community with an active share economy.’
Council has a Zero Waste Strategy. This has the following priority action:
Reduce Litter
Reduce the amount of litter entering our environment. Reduce litter by 60% by 2030.
Reduce plastic litter by 30% by 2025.
- Provide infrastructure in the right locations with appropriate service to avoid litter. (Ongoing – 2036).
- Prevent litter entering our local environment. (Ongoing – 2036).
- Build community capacity and leadership to prevent litter. (Ongoing – 2036).
- Deliver two new Return and Earn machines for plastic containers within the Inner West. (Ongoing – 2036).
Projects
Inner West Council has been the recipient of NSW Environment Protection Authority (NSW EPA)- Waste and Sustainable Material Grants including funds for:
a) targeting community education about expanded polystyrene recycling and explore reuse opportunities with local businesses for local projects, and
b) development of a Litter Prevention Roadmap
Litter Prevention Officers are currently working on projects including but not limited to:
- undertaking Australian Litter Measures (ALM) twice a year in areas such as parks, shopping strips and industrial areas
- working with the NSW EPA on programs such as Nature Hates a Tosser.
Additional ways Inner West is exploring the reduction of litter includes:
- Piloting Take Less, Inner West -as takeaway food packaging was identified as a key litter item by the community, we will implement a mug library program and single-use packaging reduction program (Take Less, Litter Less) with cafes in the Inner West; and
- Audits of public place infrastructure and gross pollutant traps
